Cherry Blossoms in Washington DC

Fimbrethil was the name of Treebeard's wife in Tolkein's stories

In an earlier post we rejoiced because we were headed to Washington DC just in time to enjoy the cherry blossoms... and we did! But the peak of this year's blossoms arrived a week after our visit. Our dear friend Mason Miller sent us some great photos of what we missed.

This particular photo made us laugh - because we immediately recognized that Mason found "Fimbrethil".

Fimbrethil is the name author J.R.R. Tolkein gave to the wife of his more-famous "Lord of the Rings" character "Treebeard". They're actually Ents, not trees. Tolkein imagined Ents to be wise, powerful, walking, tree-like creatures that guard forests from harm and keep them from mischief. Anyway, Fimbrethil has been missing for several thousand years, but apparently she's turned up in Washington DC, where she is looking over our nation's prized Japanese cherry trees.
